The appeal of Miley Cyrus. The feisty teen comfortable in her own skin.

We put up a great resistance to Miley, or Hannah mania, but after a year of a great fight we finally threw in the towel. What were we faced with? The images of another typical pouty teen trying to join fame club? Not quite. We discovered a teen girl with an infectious strong personality and a penchant for goofy games and tomboy-ish pranks. Much to our surprise (Our image of this teen sensation was carefully crafted by gossip mags that strategically captured her in contrived, off-putting poses) we discovered a girl that possesed what most 15 year old americans have lost: Childish innocence and abandon. Miley Cyrus has a coarse voice not typical of wispy , almost bunny-like and oftentimes mousy teen idols. Her demeanor is strong, her movements precise, assertive, natural. Her manner of speech is much the same. She is commanding, self-assured, and seemingly lacking of insecurities that plague many Disney stars and American teenagers at large. She’s a miniature Dolly Parton or Reba Mcintyre – you know, the kind of strong-willed, commanding, warm and natural female so rare these days. She looks you straight in the eye when talking with a remarkable lack of self-counsciousness; She talks and talks and occasionaly listens, and you know she’s not thinking about her hair or her makeup or her clothes. She smiles with a sincerity long gone from American TV – the kind of smile lacking in ‘clutter’ thinking such as “I’m smiling, I’m smiling; Is my hair right? Am i being pleasant enough?. She laughs with abandon. Miley is not seeking our attention. She’s not trying to win our affection. And this is refreshing. Most importantly, Miley is not a contrived performer. She’s explosive and comfortable running about onstage, jumping around. She’s not here to seduce us with her school-girl-gone-astray dance moves. She’s not pushing sex; We’re not fully sure what she’s pushing, but we see true ‘girl power’ in this little miss. She’s here to show what nature, what being natural, or ‘real’ is….and that seems her destiny for these gloomy, jaded, performance-saturated days. Destiny Hope seems ordained to take us back to a time when Americans were a natural folk, without the stage antics of the likes of Britney Spears, or the writhing of Madonna’s artificial sexuality. Miley Cyrus is natural and nothing is more American than the natural.
